Obtaining An FBI Background Check

Fbi Background Check

There are many different reasons why you may be asked to obtain a FBI background check on yourself. Usually you will be asked to get one of these to show your “lack” of a criminal record. With one of these types of checks, all of your information related to your criminal history is going to show up. In fact, any life event that has lead to a criminal record is going to be detailed into this report that is sent back to you. Usually when you get your report back from the FBI it will be sealed. This is because most of the places that request one of these checks want you to turn it in still sealed to make sure that you did not mess with it. Some of the reasons that you would be ask to get this report would be things like adoption, employment, and things of that nature. Refusing to obtain these reports could result in you not getting a job that you were applying for. Companies have the right to ask for these types of reports to compare them to your application. This is the only way they have of checking to see if the information that is on your application is correct.

The FBI is happy to send these types of records to you, however, this service is not free. There are a few things that you have to have and send in before the FBI will send you these papers. First of all, you have to send in a current fingerprint card. This is a card that you need to turn in with your application that you fill out to have these records sent to you. Things that will need to be included on the card will be things like signatures and current address. The fee that is charged to have this check done on you is eighteen dollars. Like most places that accept payment by mail, the FBI does not take cash. You will have to have a money order or a check for that amount to send to them. The Checks should be made out to the Treasury of the United States. Although it seems unfair that they charge a fee for obtaining files on yourself, it makes sense when you think about it. There is a lot of work that goes into performing these checks. Also, they have to pay for the shipping to mail it back to you. So in a way, you are just paying for the mailing cost and the man hours it takes to fulfill these checks.

If you are sure that you do not have a criminal record, then there should be no reason for you to be afraid to ask for one of these reports. Even if you are sure that they will find nothing on your criminal record, you will still be ask to present these records if an employer ask for them. The good news is that if nothing is found on your criminal record, then the FBI will send back a report that shows this. Even if you have done one of these checks on yourself in the past, it is very likely that your employer is going to want you to do it again. However, this should not cost you anything out of your pocket. If a company asks you to get a FBI background check done on yourself, they usually cover the fee. However, this really depends on the company that you are applying to work for. If you are obtaining these records for adoption, then you may be ask to cover the fees yourself.

Getting these checks done is not a hard task. The first step that you need to take is finding the application that you will need to fill out to get the reports. From there, you will more than likely have to go down to your local police station to have some finger prints taken. Most local police stations provide this service, but it's always a good idea to call first and make sure. After you have gathered up the finger prints, application, and the fee money you can send it into the FBI. It can take awhile to get this information back, and that is why some people go ahead and request this information before they start applying for jobs. This way if a company asks for it, you already have the reports. Just remember to keep the reports unopened.
