Many different people around the world have to run background checks to make sure that people are honest with the information they give you. However, the most commonly run check would be the company background check. Pretty much, what these checks do is look up official, as well as commercial, records about a person. Of course, most companies find that this is a necessary expense for them to take. These businesses can get the information they need on their applicants quickly and for a very low cost. This is a good thing because it's the only way that a company can stay up to date with its ever changing work force.
So why do most of the companies use their company background checks for pre-employment? The main reason why they do that is to verify the accuracy of the application that the person turned it. Also, by doing these quick checks, they are able to significantly reduce the amount of people they hire that are more likely to steal from them. After all, no one wants to hire people that are dishonest. The people that have a history of violence are also less likely to be hired. This is because those people bring an unsafe environment to the work place. Companies want their workers to feel safe at work, and if that means not hiring people that are violent or sex offenders, then they will not hire them. Some companies check your financial records during this screening to see how you handle money. Of course, this is usually only done when applying for a job as a banker or someone who will be handling lots of money. The level of check they do on you usually depends on how high of a position you are applying for.
Being asked for permission to perform one of these online background checks is not something that should upset you. After all, it is the company's right to do these types of checks on people they are thinking about hiring. Most low level jobs do not want to spend the money on performing these types of checks. With that being said, the higher up you go in the work force, the more likely you are to have one of these checks done on you. The best thing that you can remember is to always give out the correct information on your application, because if you lie, they will find out. Even if the information they get from the report is less than positive, you still may get the job if you are honest. However, the second that you lie to them you will be out the door. So do yourself a favor, and always be honest, otherwise, you are just wasting everyone's time.
